Choosing an activewear manufacturer is not only a price comparison. The right factory must understand performance fabrics, fit, construction, branding, quality control and delivery requirements. A supplier that looks competitive at the quotation stage can still create costly delays if sampling, testing or production controls are unclear.
This 12-point checklist helps activewear brands evaluate manufacturers in China before placing a bulk order.
1. Confirm the Manufacturer’s Product Specialization
Activewear production requires different knowledge from ordinary fashion manufacturing. Stretch recovery, seam strength, opacity, moisture management and garment fit all affect the finished product. Ask which product categories the supplier manufactures regularly and whether it can explain the construction requirements of leggings, sports bras, gym tops, jackets, joggers, tennis wear and coordinated sets.

2. Review OEM and ODM Capabilities
OEM production suits brands with a complete tech pack, measurements, artwork and material specifications. ODM support helps when a brand needs to develop a style from a reference, sketch or initial concept.
Clarify whether the supplier provides pattern making, grading, fabric sourcing, sample development, print and logo development, custom labels, packaging, size sets and pre-production samples. 3. Evaluate Fabric Knowledge
Fabric selection affects comfort, coverage, compression, durability and cost. A reliable activewear manufacturer should explain the differences between polyester-spandex, nylon-spandex and other performance blends.
Discuss fabric weight, stretch direction, recovery, hand feel, colorfastness and opacity. If a collection requires specific performance claims, agree on the test method and acceptance standard before approving the fabric. Request the fabric composition, weight and testing requirements in writing instead of relying on a general claim such as “high quality.”
4. Check the Sampling Process
Sampling shows whether the factory can translate specifications into a workable garment. Ask what information is required before development and how many revision rounds are included.

Provide clear comments with photos and measurements. Confirm every change in the updated specification rather than relying only on messages.
5. Understand the MOQ Structure
MOQ may be calculated by style, color, fabric or order total. A quoted minimum of 100 pieces can mean 100 pieces per color rather than 100 pieces across several colors.
Ask the manufacturer to state the MOQ per style and color, minimum fabric order, minimum quantity for custom-dyed fabric, and minimum quantity for custom labels and packaging. This information helps build a realistic assortment and prevents unexpected surcharges.
6. Confirm Printing and Branding Options
The correct branding method depends on the fabric, artwork, order quantity and intended use. Options can include screen printing, heat transfer, sublimation, embroidery, silicone logos and reflective applications.
Ask the factory to recommend a method after reviewing the fabric and artwork. Confirm logo size, placement, color and wash requirements on the approved sample. Private-label details should also cover care labels, size labels, hangtags, barcode stickers and packaging.
7. Assess Fit and Size-Control Procedures
Fit consistency is especially important for leggings, sports bras and fitted tops. Provide a complete size chart with measurement points and tolerances. Ask how the factory checks patterns, graded sizes and finished garment measurements. For a new style, review a development sample and an approved pre-production sample. A size set may be appropriate when grading or fit is complex.
8. Define Quality Standards Before Production
Quality expectations must be measurable. Agree on workmanship, measurement tolerances, color standards, print placement, seam appearance and packaging before production starts.

9. Compare Quotations on the Same Basis
The lowest quotation is not always the lowest final cost. Make sure each supplier is quoting the same fabric, construction, branding, packaging and commercial terms. Check whether the quotation includes sample charges, fabric testing, labels, hangtags, polybags, cartons and inland transport. Also confirm the currency, validity period, payment terms and delivery basis.
10. Verify Production Capacity and Lead Time
Ask for separate lead times for sampling, material preparation and bulk production. Production timing should begin only after required approvals and materials are confirmed. Discuss seasonal capacity early if the delivery date is fixed. Add time for inspection, shipping and possible revisions when planning a launch date.
11. Review Communication and Documentation
Fast replies are useful, but accurate documentation is more important. The manufacturer should keep specifications, comments and approvals organized throughout development and production. Look for clear answers to technical questions and written confirmation of changes. A dependable supplier should flag missing information instead of making silent assumptions.
12. Start With a Controlled Trial Order
For a new supplier relationship, begin with a manageable order that still represents normal quality requirements. Use it to evaluate sampling accuracy, communication, production consistency, inspection results and delivery performance. Do not lower quality standards for the trial; the goal is to test the complete workflow before increasing order volume.
